下降陰府是他的第四個下降,耶穌來敲我們更深處的心門。這幅下降陰府的聖像畫是來自於十六世紀莫斯Novgorod學派,按照古老的傳統,復活的那一位下降死人的國度解放他們,帶領他們到永生。就像東正教在聖週六禮儀詠唱聖歌中所描述的:「祢來到世界拯救亞當,因為在人世沒有找到他,所以祢更深入陰府尋找他。」在復活的聖像畫不是描繪基督走出墳墓的行動,而是在其內下降至更深,基督並沒有從死亡中解放後就離開了墳墓。基督復活的偉大在於祂進入那黑暗元首的國度;就是指亞當和厄娃及其後代子孫被奴隸的國度。
Harrowing of Hell is his fourth descent, knocking once again and into deep at the door of our hearts .This icon of Harrowing of Hell is from the school of Moscow Novgorod in the 16th Century. According to the tradition, the resurrected one would descent to the world of the dead, liberate them and lead them to eternal life. Just as described by the Orthodox Church in a chant during Holy Saturday, saying “You come to the world to save Adam. Since no one finds him in this world, therefore you descend into hell to look for him.” In the Eastern tradition the icon of the resurrection does not depict Christ in the act of walking out of the grave, but in that of harrowing. Christ does not leave the tomb as one who has freed himself from death and runs away. In fact, the Lord did not conquer death by himself as if he were a superman. The greatness of Christ's resurrection consists in the fact that he enters the empire of the prince of darkness who holds Adam and Eve and his descendants in slavery.
