在十一世紀末，開始發展描畫聖母獨自祈禱，或懷中抱著小孩子的這類聖像畫。它是善導之母的變形。同樣，聖母也是用一隻手指向了耶穌。在善導之母和慈悲聖母的聖像畫中，小孩是在前腰位置上出現。但在慈悲聖母的聖像畫裡，是彼此對向，雙臉頰互相輕觸, 孩子緊緊抓住母親的脖子或外袍，有時輕輕地撫摸她的臉。
At the end of the 11th Century, illustrations of Our Lady praying alone or carrying a young child were developed. It is a variation of the Odighitria (Hodigrita), and similarly Our Lady points at Jesus with her hand. In both images of Mother of Good Counsel and Mother of God the Tenderness, the child is placed in front of her waist. But in the image of the Mother of God the Tenderness, both characters are looking at the other, with their cheeks slightly touching, and the child holds tightly at his Mother’s neck or cloak, while in some images he softly caresses her face.
