In New Testament times King Abgar of the Syrian city of Edessa fell ill and sent a messenger to Jesus to request healing. Christ pressed a cloth to his own face, miraculously imprinting it with his image, and sent the cloth to Abgar. He was healed through the miraculous cloth. A disciple of Christ came and baptized him because the image appeared miraculously and was not painted, the Image is called “not made by hands”.
